Can you help?

5 Oct

We have received the following request for assistance:

“Bob Fagan was identified for promotion to Chief Petty Officer (Cook) in early 1982 whilst serving onboard HMS Sheffield.  This fact is acknowledged by  one of his shipmates at that time and the Radio Supervisor aboard HMS Sheffield.  He remembers seeing the promotion signal with Bob Fagan’s name on it and they both toasted Bob’s forthcoming promotion.  Regrettably Bob never survived to be promoted and his widow and grandchildren have no acknowledgement that Bob was selected for promotion to ‘Chief’.

I am trying to get acknowledgement of Bob’s achievement for Sue his widow and their children and grandchildren.  I am confident the Second Sea Lord of the Royal Navy will issue a letter of acknowledgement, but given that the archives relating to Bob Fagan are not retained after 15 years beyond what would have been is final date in the Royal Navy (possibly 1986), I have no evidence to support his selection.

I am wondering if any of your members appeared on the same selection signal for promotion to Chief Petty Officer in 1982 and if so have a copy of the signal which also shows Bob Fagan as having been selected.  It may be that there is a Cook, Steward, Caterer or Supply Senior Rating who was on the same signal and has kept a copy.  If there is such a document still in existence a photocopy would be all the proof needed to get recognition to the memory of Bob Fagan and for his family.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter, I am hoping we can achieve this; it would be a fitting tribute to ‘Chief Petty Officer (Cook)’ Bob Fagan.”

If you can help in this matter please contact the SAMA Office
