Opportunity for Veterans to visit West Falklands

9 Dec

Have you considered planning a visit to West Falklands during your stay in the Falklands?

In the past, several members have had the privilege to visit the grave of Captain Hamilton MC who is buried in Port Howard cemetery.  Furthermore, a plaque has been mounted on the rock at the combat site where he was killed in action on 10 June 82.  With a little bit of planning it’s not too difficult to make it part of your itinerary.  For example, taking the ferry from Newhaven to Port Howard costs £20 return.

Ferry from Hew Haven to Port Howard:  Veterans may travel by road to the ferry terminal at Newhaven which is situated some 75 miles from Port Stanley.  The ferry serving the route is the MV Concordia Bay which is based at New Haven.  It runs a regular service (please check their website for Workboat Services for quarterly schedule) from the terminal to Port Howard on West Falkland.

As the ferry serves other routes around the islands, the monthly schedule usually includes 3 or 4 windows for the New Haven/Port Howard route.  The crossing to Port Howard takes 1 hour 20 minutes.

To facilitate your visit arrangements to the West, SAMA Member, Chris O’Brien (ex LXX Squadron RAF) who has rented a house at Chartres West Falkland, is willing to transport and escort up to 2 members to the cemetery and combat site.  In addition, he is willing to offer accommodation and one days fly fishing on the Chartres River and transport members back to the ferry for the return crossing.  (No cost for any of the above and fly fishing equipment supplied).

He plans to be at Chartres in 2014 from mid –February to the end of April and late on in October – November.  Please contact him via the SAMA Office if you wish to plan a visit to the West.
