Support funding for Flights to Falklands

Support funding for flights to the Falkland Islands

The Issue

There has been some evidence recently in social media that persons who wish to visit the Falkland Islands have been disappointed by the lack of Charitable Funding to help them on their journey. The association has also been disappointed by the low level of applications for FFA money passed into SAMA care on the folding of FFA. Being charity money, and SAMA subject to Charity Commission scrutiny means that we have to follow carefully and logically the selection processes for the award of grants towards travel to the Falkland Islands for therapeutic needs. That process should not prevent qualifying beneficiaries from receiving a grant. It just needs some form filing and effort to pass through the processes required. Please do not hesitate to start and carry through the process.

The FFA Money

When the FFA decided to close down, they asked SAMA 82 to hold a percentage of their funds which is to be used for visits to the Falkland Islands, by families that were members of the association at the time of closing. This money is not SAMA 82 money. The approval for use of this money is still sought from those who were on the FFA committee at that time. SAMA 82 does not have any say on who benefits from this fund.

Ongoing work with regards to flights

There has been a lot of work done in respect of seeking support for families to visit the Falklands and being given the opportunity for them to use the concessionary fare paying scheme available to veterans. However at this stage we cannot get an agreement with the carrier. This does not mean that we have given up trying and we will continue to lobby for a more flexible and more cost effective way of enabling veterans, dependants and hopefully family members to visit the islands at reduced cost.

MoD Air Bridge Limitations

Comments have been made about the plane being ‘half empty’. The flights are not based on the number of passengers, it is based on pay load weight and the amount of fuel required to divert to another airport should either Ascension or Mount Pleasant become unusable. The maintenance problems with the runway at Ascension means that the weight of planes landing there has been reduced. The air bridge carries a lot of equipment, some quite heavy; it also carries duty personnel. It is the key MoD supply line for the Military base in the Falklands and as such much of the plane’s payload allowance is in the hold and therefore there will always be empty seats.

SAMA Grants and other sources

SAMA 82 does have the provision to make small grants to veterans and their dependants who qualify as beneficiaries. These grants are, however, means tested. Other organisations such as SSAFA and RBL can also assist veterans to visit the Falklands. Do not be reluctant to seek grant support from other service charities but you do have to make your case well.
