Charity Band Concert–Birmingham 26th November

Celebrating 100 years from the Somme 1916 to present day.  The concert will take place between 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm on Saturday 26th November at Bramall Music Building, Birmingham University.

Presented by the ‘Friends’ of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum and featuring the AD Concert Band.

Cooking & Baking Residential Weekend

A weekend of cooking, baking and banter run by veterans for veterans.  Interested?   Read on………

“Have you ever wished you could spend a whole weekend learning how to cook and bake at a top UK cookery school in the company of other veterans?  Not tried cooking or baking before?  Want to develop your skills and impress others?  Are you intimidated by the idea of spending time on a cookery course with people who are not from a service background? Do you want to learn the basics from a top tutor while sharing a few jokes and reminiscences with yours truly?  Then the Bootneck Baker veterans only course is right up your civvy –street.

We have teamed up with Ashburton Cookery School to bring you a fun weekend veterans-only course situated at the edge of Dartmoor in the lovely county of Devon .The first of these courses is planned to start in the Spring of 2017.  Our aim is to use the medium of cookery & baking as a therapy for coping with life outside the service, in retirement , dealing with stress or bereavement or just being on your own again.  We want to help elevate individual esteem and encourage a feeling of self worth so you will come away from the course with a basic understanding of food hygiene, nutrition and cooking self reliance through a shared experience with ex-forces pals.  That’s a weekend of cooking, baking and banter run by a veteran for veterans.  No rank, no bull just cooking and baking.

The course is facilitated by a Falklands War veteran with a passion for all things food in an open kitchen environment with the overall aim to get attendees to create a tasty lunch and evening meal recipe which they eat together over a glass of wine/beer/water etc.  An element of social activity will be encouraged on the Saturday evening.  Each attendee will get to take away a box of their own baked goodies together with the course notes and tips, recipes and a certificate of attendance.  Plus through the dedicated Bootneck Baker blog you will get an ongoing link back to the course and be able to keep in touch with other course members, chat to other veterans , give feedback and exchange photographs, ideas and recipes.

There will be a fee payable to the venue (not to me as my time will be free) which is estimated to be in the region of £300.00.(there will be an additional charge for accommodation) You can either fund your own place on the course or seek sponsorship or financial support from veteran’s charities if you have limited means.
